David: Whole Heart

This episode was a fun one for Dave and Burnadette to record together. King David is a treasure home of insight into what it means to follow the Lord God with all of our heart, soul, mind, and strength.

He lived his life feeling free to embrace God through every weakness, triumph, and test. He teaches us to hold nothing back in our pursuit of God.

David’s story occurs during the time of Israel’s “united Kingdom.” Before an eventual split in the Kingdom of Israel, there are three kings who care for God’s people. Saul is the “people’s king” but has NO HEART for God. David is “God’s King” and though imperfect in many ways, exhibits a WHOLE HEART for God. His son Solomon embraces things in life that ensure his HALF HEART God experience, and though blessed beyond imagination, finishes his life in a pitiful pool of idolatry.

David was a very imperfect person. And yet, he never gave up on his heart for God. Psalms reveals this over and over again. Despite all his challenges, responsibilities, and good and bad decisions, David’s heart always ended up in the right place. About 2/3rds of the Psalms were written through King David.

“Bless the LORD, O my soul, and all that is within me, bless His holy name.
Bless the LORD, O my soul, and forget none of His benefits.
Who pardons all your iniquities and Who heals all your diseases.
Who redeems your life from the pit.
Who crowns you with lovingkindness and compassion;
Who satisfies your years with good things,
so that your youth is renewed like the eagle.”
– Psalm 103:1-5

“Then David the king went in and sat before the LORD, and he said, “Who am I, O Lord GOD, and what is my house, that You have brought me this far? And yet this was insignificant in Your eyes, O Lord GOD, for You have spoken also of the house of Your servant concerning the distant future. And this is the custom of man, O Lord GOD.

Again what more can David say to You? For You know Your servant, O Lord GOD! For the sake of Your word, and according to Your own heart, You have done all this greatness to let Your servant know.” – 2 Samuel 7:18-21
