Father's Hand Moving

What’s in a name? When your parents named you they probably wanted to communicate something about your roots. Or perhaps the hopes they shared for you. Or maybe they just liked your name. 🙂

When the Father named His Son, the Name Jesus was His human name. Today Burnadette and I are reviewing Names that preceded the Name Jesus (Name “above all Names” – Philippians 2:10). Isaiah (one of the prophets  who spoke often of the coming of the Deliverer/the Messiah) gives us sweeping insight into the identity of the Son within the heart and plan of God. We turn to Isaiah 9 for help.

“For a child will be born to us, a son will be given to us; And the government will rest on His shoulders; And His name will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Eternal Father, Prince of Peace.

There will be no end to the increase of His government or of peace, on the throne of David and over his kingdom, to establish it and to uphold it with justice and righteousness – from then on and forevermore. The zeal of the LORD of hosts will accomplish this.”

It is difficult to imagine that the Son has always existed. Though He “proceeded” from the Father, this occurred outside of time within never-ending eternity. Not only is God Jesus’ Father – He is the Father of all living things. Bottom line: God identifies Himself as “I AM.” Where does Jesus fit within such greatness?!

“Your father Abraham rejoiced to see My day, and he saw it and was glad.” So the Jews said to Him, “You are not yet fifty years old, and have You seen Abraham?” Jesus said to them, ‘Truly, truly, I say to you, before Abraham was born, I am.’ Therefore they picked up stones to throw at Him, but Jesus hid Himself and went out of the temple.” – John 8:56-59
