The Grumbling Heart

Facing adversity is a significant part of life. We can walk toward it, turn and run, or we can grumble and complain. Only one of these is a victorious faith choice.

By disarming our natural propensity to flee trouble or to resort to feeling sorry for ourselves, we can ensure outcomes that will honor God AND give peace to our hearts.

Because of grumbling, what should have been a 40 day journey in the wilderness for the sons of Israel became a 40 year odyssey. Psalm 106:21-25 summarizes the result 🙁

“They forgot God their Savior, Who had done great things in Egypt, wonders in the land of Ham and awesome things by the Red Sea. Therefore He said that He would destroy them, and had not Moses His chosen one stood in the gap before Him, His wrath would not have turned away from destroying them.

Then they despised the beautiful land; they did not believe in His word, but grumbled in their tents. They did not listen to the voice of the LORD.”

“Now Nadab and Abihu, the sons of Aaron, took their respective firepans, and after putting fire in them, placed incense on it and offered strange fire before the LORD, which He had not commanded them. And fire came out from the presence of the LORD and consumed them, and they died before the LORD.” – Leviticus 10:1,2

By taking care to convert our temptation to grumble into fuel for good, we can reverse one of the most powerfully destructive tendencies within humanity. The energy it takes to grumble can be used to build our personal faith – and to bless and benefit those around us. SELAH!
