DAVID’S SONG

Heart songs are the best songs. Think about those which make your heart sing. A love song. Memory evoking music and lyrics. Anthems. And on and on.

In 2 Samuel 23:1-7 David refers to himself as “the sweet Psalmist of Israel.” Sweet could easily be translated “singing sweet things.” Here are a few sweet Psalms reflective of David’s relationship with God. Check them out!

Psalm 1
The big picture on the two roads of life. “Instead you thrill to GOD’S Word, you chew on Scripture day and night. You’re a tree replanted in Eden, bearing fresh fruit every month, never dropping a leaf, always in blossom.” (MSG)

Psalm 2
Who is the Son and how are we to respond to Him? “Do homage to the Son, that He not become angry, and you perish in the way, for His wrath may soon be kindled. How blessed are all who take refuge in Him!” (NASB)

Psalm 16
What did David believe about everlasting life? “The LORD is the portion of my inheritance and my cup; You support my lot. The lines have fallen to me in pleasant places. Indeed, my heritage is beautiful to me.”  (NASB)

Psalm 34
How does God feel about His children? “The angel of the LORD encamps around those who fear Him, and rescues them. O taste and see that the LORD is good; how blessed is the man who takes refuge in Him!” (NASB)

Psalm 37
What does this Psalm teach about God “holding” our hand? “The steps of a man are established by the LORD, and He delights in his way. When he falls, he will not be hurled headlong, because the LORD is the One who holds his hand.” (NASB)

We recommend reading Psalms often enough to make sure you have a dozen or so of your own favorites reflecting your own connection with God.

These chapters from 1 Samuel are from the days of King David’s strength. They are filled with hope – and many amazing Psalms born out of great reliance upon God throughout David’s everyday challenges. Each provides backdrop for the genesis of these timeless songs of praise in which, along with King David, we wrestle with our life circumstances. Enjoy!
