We arrive at a serious pivot point in David’s story. Chapter 8 lists his triumphs. Chapter 9 gives insight into his kind heart toward Saul’s family (he owed them nothing).
Then a chilling statement: “it came about in the spring, when kings go out to battle…David stayed in Jerusalem.”
This is the way of the tempter. If he can capture us at an opportune moment his chances for a successful foothold increases. While David should have been fighting and directing the war effort he delegated this to his leaders. This left him time to roam on his roof. So begins a series of events which will shape the future of history – for better and for worse.
Though David fails morally to a devastating degree, the tempter will not be able to capture his soul – or devour his legacy. David’s heart will continue to respond to His Lord. Uriah’s words (husband of Bathsheba) are devastating to the disobedient heart:
Uriah said to David, “The ark and Israel and Judah are staying in temporary shelters, and my lord Joab and the servants of my lord are camping in the open field. Shall I then go to my house to eat and to drink and to lie with my wife? By your life and the life of your soul, I will not do this thing.” – 2 Samuel 11:11
Cold words which should have awakened the conscience of the sweet Psalmist of Israel.
Perhaps Jesus reflects on this here:
“But Jesus, on His part, was not entrusting Himself to them, for He knew all men, and because He did not need anyone to testify concerning man, for He Himself knew what was in man.” – John 2:24-25
