Giving is Who God is. Creation reveals so many things about a God Who delights in giving. His glory in the cosmos. His gift of beauty in creation. His Fatherhood over every living creature and every human soul. His authority over the building blocks of life. His perfect Son – gifted to a lost and helpless world.
The essence of the Good News is all about what God has done for us. In the words of Jesus from Luke 18: “And He said to him, “Why do you call Me good? No one is good except God alone.” All human goodness flows from the goodness of God.
To become someone who gives is to unlock and replenish the soul. The Gospels are filled with accounts of how Jesus set Himself aside and became the ultimate unselfish Giver. And giving is also inseparably tied to forgiveness.
Philippians 2:1-11 paints a very clear picture of what it meant for Jesus to set aside His eternal “God-ness” to come and rescue us. This is why Jesus is the supreme “Author and Finisher” of our faith. He shows us the giving path.
Hebrews 12.1-2
“Therefore, since we have so great a cloud of witnesses surrounding us, let us also lay aside every encumbrance and the sin which so easily entangles us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of faith, who for the joy set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.”
