Love has many dimensions. Emotional overlap. Physical touch. Companionship. Camaraderie. Intimacy. It takes intentionality and effort to keep the fire of love burning adequately to meet the needs of a man and a woman. Especially since men and women have such different needs, some which overlap, and some that don’t.
Let’s take a look at the greater context of relationships. Jesus taught that we will not be married in heaven (we will be married to Him). It is so important to understand that we will be husband and wife for a lifetime – we will be brother and sister for eternity. Mind-blowing!
“Let love be without hypocrisy. Abhor what is evil; cling to what is good.
Be devoted to one another in brotherly love; give preference to one another in honor;
not lagging behind in diligence, fervent in spirit, serving the Lord;
rejoicing in hope, persevering in tribulation, devoted to prayer,
contributing to the needs of God’s hoy ones, practicing hospitality.” – Romans 12:9-13
Take the time to define, reflect, and articulate each of these topics. It is more about reflective process than anything. It will make your conversation satisfying, and accentuate successes and identify the next challenges for your couple journey!
Here is the big picture:
“Wives, understand and support your husbands by submitting to them in ways that honor the Master. Husbands, go all out in love for your wives. Don’t take advantage of them. Children, do what your parents tell you. This delights the Master no end. Parents, don’t come down too hard on your children or you’ll crush their spirits.” – Colossians 3:18-21/Message
