Today we consider Jesus as our healer. What is the biblical context for the nature and extent of healing? What was the Son’s purpose in coming to the earth in human form regarding our healing? What did Jesus’ serving-healing look like, and what are the implications for us as we follow our King?
“When the scribes of the Pharisees saw that He was eating with the sinners and tax collectors, they said to His disciples, ‘Why is He eating and drinking with tax collectors and sinners?’ And hearing them Jesus said, “It is not those who are healthy who need a physician, but those who are sick; I did not come to call the righteous, but sinners.” – Mark 2:16,17 Wow.
As we have mentioned before, the Bible is a series of woven threads, each provided to teach us about the mind and heart of God. It is God’s Story, and by extension, our story as well. Jesus impacted thousands of people physically in order to spiritually set free the hearts of millions!
Imagine having your child dying or possessed by an evil spirit, and to have Jesus be your last hope that he or she could recover and be well? What if you had been blind since birth and with a word your eyes were able to see? Or a woman with a desperate physical condition – or a leper who had lost all hope of ever interacting with your community again? What kinds of emotions would you feel if you were living with any of these maladies?

“Come to Me, all who are weary and heavy-laden, and I will give you rest. Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For My yoke is easy and My burden is light.” – Matthew 11:28-30
Could it be that the reason Jesus healed physically was to reveal to mankind what He was able to do within any soul who calls upon His Name?! Which is more important, to be healed physically or to have one’s soul delivered? Mark 2:8-11 explains this to us!
Immediately Jesus, aware in His spirit that they were reasoning that way within themselves, said to them, “Why are you reasoning about these things in your hearts? Which is easier, to say to the paralytic, ‘Your sins are forgiven’; or to say, ‘Get up, and pick up your pallet and walk’? But so that you may know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins” — He said to the paralytic, “I say to you, get up, pick up your pallet and go home.” And he got up and immediately picked up the pallet and went out in the sight of everyone, so that they were all amazed and were glorifying God, saying, “We have never seen anything like this.”
While Jesus healed thousands physically, He is delivering millions of us from the power of our sin, through faith in His words and His works and His authority.
