Genesis 1
– in Genesis 1-11 we learn tons of foundational things about God, man, and the plan
– we are taught that we are made in the image of God, unlike other angels or heaven-dwellers
– the light and darkness conversation begins and unfolds throughout the Story (Genesis 1:1-5; 14-19)
Bringing Light is the essential action of God.
1 In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. 2 The earth was formless and void, and darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was moving over the surface of the waters. 3 Then God said, “Let there be light”; and there was light. 4 God saw that the light was good; and God separated the light from the darkness. 5 God called the light day, and the darkness He called night. And there was evening and there was morning, one day.
The lights we are able to see like clockwork:
14 Then God said, “Let there be lights in the expanse of the heavens to separate the day from the night, and let them be for signs and for seasons and for days and years; 15 and let them be for lights in the expanse of the heavens to give light on the earth”; and it was so. 16 God made the two great lights, the greater light to govern the day, and the lesser light to govern the night; He made the stars also. 17 God placed them in the expanse of the heavens to give light on the earth, 18 and to govern the day and the night, and to separate the light from the darkness; and God saw that it was good. 19 There was evening and there was morning, a fourth day.
Jesus IS and always HAS been the Light of the World:
– this Light thread culminates in John 1:9,10 “There was the true Light which, coming into the world, enlightens every man. He was in the world, and the world was made through Him, and the world did not know Him.” (Jesus)
Living Full Circle
– In Matthew 5:14-16 He brings us and sends us full circle: “You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden; nor does anyone light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on the lampstand, and it gives light to all who are in the house. Let your light shine before men in such a way that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father who is in heaven.”
√ God IS Light and in Him there is no darkness at all (1 John 1:5).
√ We are the light of the world – through us He shines into the darkness that is all around us. In this way we fulfill the image of God in the world – we are light givers – we can and must shine into our dark and weary world!
The Light and darkness thread is so apparent in the God Story.

Part of the Psalm Light thread:
Psalm 27:1
The Lord is my light and my salvation; Whom shall I fear? The Lord is the defense of my life; Whom shall I dread?
Psalm 36:9
For with You is the fountain of life; in Your light we see light.
Psalm 97:11
Light is sown like seed for the righteous and gladness for the upright in heart.
Psalm 119:105
Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.
And finally, Jesus said: “I am the Light of the world; he who follows Me will not walk in the darkness, but will have the Light of life.” John 8:12
