Wow – here are some great promises regarding finding a shelter life! There are 5 Hebrew words (Old Testament) for shelter, each with its own nuance. In Psalm 91 (one of the few ascribed to Moses) speaks of life under the wings of God.“He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High will abide in the shadow of the Almighty. I will say to the Lord, “My refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust!”For it is He who delivers you from the snare of the trapper and from the deadly pestilence. He will cover you with His pinions, and under His wings you may seek refuge; His faithfulness is a shield and bulwark (protection around us).” Psalm 91
Many in our American and world culture are content living in a God-free space, often going to great lengths to discredit or neutralize the impact of God-centric views of life. Perhaps it is because if we admit there IS a God is we must then wrestle with our own accountability for our actions toward ourselves and others. Self is the rule of law in the brave new (and old) world. This Psalm helps us to be freed from the futility of going it alone, amplifying so many relational things regarding our connection and need for God. This also helps us understand the difference between fearing God and fearing man.
Shelter in the New Testament carries the picture of a nest. It is part of the Kingdom teaching found in Matthew 13. “He presented another parable to them, saying, “The kingdom of heaven is like a mustard seed, which a man took and sowed in his field; and this is smaller than all other seeds, but when it is full grown, it is larger than the garden plants and becomes a tree, so that the birds of the air come and nest in its branches.”
When we engage in shelter toward others we reflect the heart of our King. From predators on the ground to bad weather from the skies, His Kingdom brings shelter to our exposed world.
