King first. Then Kingdom. Then Church. Jesus’ work flows from His Kingship. Jesus said “My kingdom is not of this world. If My kingdom were of this world, then My servants would be fighting so that I would not be handed over to the Jews; but as it is, My kingdom is not of this realm.” (John 18:36) He was speaking volumes about how His Father views the human race. Without a response to His Kingship – what do people really have? Our own little kingdoms, I think.
This is at the heart of an understanding of the headship or Kingship of Jesus over our lives. To those who are willing to subject ourselves to His Kingdom realm, the door of humility opens possibilities not entertained by much of humanity.
Just as the letter to the Ephesians defines our inheritance in Jesus, Colossians focuses on Who this King is. When we embrace His Kingship over our lives the Kingdom begins to grow in and through us. This results in finding our place in His “body,” and the road to a rich, fulfilling, and enduring Kingdom life. “Your Kingdom come. Your will be done. On earth as it is in heaven!”
Living a Kingdom life is the quest of a Christ-follower in any century. Hearing “well done” from our King is an exhilarating gift!
