Sunday morning was pretty awesome for us. The welcome rain flowed all morning and the distant (and not-so-distant) thunder was breathtaking. Our porch was chilly enough for light blankets as we began our celebration of peace (shalom). For a moment I even considered hot chocolate – but then counted the carbs. Sad.
As we often do we turned to the Psalms we had been reading throughout the week, and settled on Psalm 29. It was wonderful to read as the rain fell and the thunder ebbed and flowed.
“The voice of the LORD is upon the waters; the God of glory thunders. The LORD is over many waters. The voice of the LORD is powerful, the voice of the LORD is majestic.
The voice of the LORD breaks the cedars; yes, the LORD breaks in pieces the cedars of Lebanon. He makes the mountains of Lebanon skip like a calf, and the high ridges like a young wild ox.
The voice of the LORD hews out flames of fire. The voice of the LORD shakes the wilderness; the LORD shakes the desert wilderness of desert Kadesh. The voice of the LORD makes the deer to calve and strips the forests bare;
And in His temple everything says, “Glory!” The LORD sat as King at the flood; yes, the LORD sits as King forever. The LORD will give strength to His people; the LORD will bless His people with peace.”
We then read through the first 6 chapters of the Gospel of John and celebrated the bread which came down out of heaven. Beautiful! I pulled out an old song from years ago (my voice could barely reach the notes) and my fingers were rusty: “Feed me, by Your hand. Lead me, to the promised land. Manna, from heaven above. Your Word is life, Your Word is love! Your Word I have hid in my heart that I might not sin against you. Your Word is a light to my path and a lamp unto my feet.”
We shared peacefully in the cup of Christ, confessing our sins, articulating our hopes, and remembering what Jesus did for us. And then family joined us for lunch.
It was a perfect sabbath! REST. One of the great gifts given to us by Yahweh through His people the Jews.
Talk to you soon. Dave & Burney
