John was prolific because he was an eyewitness from day one. His gospel is unique in insight into who Jesus was and what He experienced. Jesus was close to Peter, James, and John.
John’s letters are deeply loving and filled with insight into what it means to believe with the entire fiber of our soul. His heart for God’s little children is heart-warming.
His vision on the island of Patmos (The Revelation of Jesus Christ) beautifully represents the culmination of the end of the age. This is one of the few remaining photos of John on the island.
John – in his own words:
“This is the disciple who is testifying to these things and wrote these things, and we know that his testimony is true. And there are also many other things which Jesus did, which if they were written in detail, I suppose that even the world itself would not contain the books that would be written.” – John 21:24,25
“He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches. To him who overcomes, to him I will give some of the hidden manna, and I will give him a white stone, and a new name written on the stone which no one knows but he who receives it.”
– Revelation 2:17
“For whatever is born of God overcomes the world; and this is the victory that has overcome the world — our faith. Who is the one who overcomes the world, but he who believes that Jesus is the Son of God?” – 1 John 5:4,5
As far as we can tell, John outlived the rest of the disciples. It may explain this:
“Peter, turning around, *saw the disciple whom Jesus loved following them; the one who also had leaned back on His bosom at the supper and said, “Lord, who is the one who betrays You?”
So Peter seeing him said to Jesus, “Lord, and what about this man?” Jesus said to him, “If I want him to remain until I come, what is that to you? You follow Me!” Therefore this saying went out among the brethren that that disciple would not die; yet Jesus did not say to him that he would not die, but only, “If I want him to remain until I come, what is that to you?”
– John 21:20-23
Personally, I am planning on falling asleep.
