Isn’t it amazing how lyrics or melodies can stick with you forever?! I can still sing all the words to songs from my childhood – not to mention my teen and pre-teen years. I read somewhere that we memorize the lyrics to over 2000 songs by the time we are 18. Wow!
When we read the Psalms it is easy to see them as literature rather than songs. And in some ways this is good – these songs in their original language and culture would probably sound pretty odd according to our tastes. But the Psalms were written to be songs of the heart – and this is the challenge of a Christ-follower in any century or decade – to make use of the Psalms as living representations for our own songs of the soul.
This, of course, takes a little work and imagination – but the word pictures in the God Story are timeless. We can literally rediscover original meaning from these “songs” and translate them to our own singing hearts. Not to mention the “psalms” we can find through music that inspires us within our own genre choices and personal tastes.
So sing it out friend! We know that heart songs are a big part of finding a satisfied mind.
