GENESIS 21-24 & JOB 15-19
As Abraham’s family grows his challenges increase. Remember, Abraham was called from the mass of humanity to become the recipient of God’s gracious choice. Because Abraham had a seed of faith (Romans 4) God set His affection upon him to “make him a great nation” and to bless all the nations of the earth – past, present, and future.
One time I made an “Abragraph,” charting the ups and downs of Abraham’s faith. He was literally a rough diamond in the process of being cut and polished. In these chapters he comes face to face with his own short-comings, as well as the unrelenting faithfulness of God. For all practical purposes, Abraham’s self-will seems to be dead as he raises his hand to slay his son. And the great God of mercy intervenes!
Meanwhile, Job continues to wrestle with his friend’s input – and with his own struggling heart. There is nothing about his circumstances that makes any sense, and as he endures his friends’ misplaced ideas, he continues to articulate the deep questions of his heart. It is important to track “process” as Job’s experience unfolds. Ultimately God is bringing glory to Himself by His choice to expose, stretch, and humble Job. Now his friends’ stories are being woven into Job’s story, and they too are exposed before the God of all living. Do you ever wonder what becomes of his friends post the events of this book?
Deep roots are established through deep growth – and often over many days!
