Mary: Treasuring Heart

Mary’s eyes saw things no other person in history had witnessed. Imagine being a teen-aged girl and being visited by an angel? Or the first time she saw her son Jesus perform a miracle?

As each supernatural event occurred, Mary integrated them into her mind and heart. They literally became “treasures” to be stored for coming days. Remarkable events. Faith-shaping experiences.

Like Mary, we each have opportunities to observe and discover our own personal life-treasures. These are things which make our hearts not only sing, but also provide anchors for our souls. Things we can pull out when the challenges of life test us.

“So they came in a hurry and found their way to Mary and Joseph, and the baby as He lay in the manger. When they had seen this, they made known the statement which had been told them about this Child.

And all who heard it wondered at the things which were told them by the shepherds. But Mary treasured all these things, pondering them in her heart.

The shepherds went back, glorifying and praising God for all that they had heard and seen, just as had been told them.”  – Luke 2:16-20

Mary helps us to take our own inventory of what we treasure. She is a shining example of how one life can experience remarkable faith – and store up treasure for the life to come! How often she had to reach into her treasure heart to find direction and hope for the days ahead.

“For all these things the nations of the world eagerly seek; but your Father knows that you need these things. But seek His kingdom first, and these things will be added to you. Do not be afraid, little flock, for your Father has chosen gladly to give you the kingdom. Sell your possessions and give to charity; make yourselves money belts which do not wear out, an unfailing treasure in heaven, where no thief comes near nor moth destroys. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.”  – Luke 12:30-34
