GENESIS 21-24 & JOB 15-19
As Abraham’s family grows his challenges increase. Abraham was called from the mass of humanity to become the recipient of God’s gracious choice. Because Abraham had a seed of faith (Romans 4) God set His affection upon him to “make him a great nation” and to bless all the nations of the earth – past, present, and future.
One time I made an “Abragraph,” charting the ups and downs of Abraham’s faith. He was truly a rough diamond in the process of being pressed, cut, and polished. In these chapters he comes face to face with his own short-comings, as well as the unwavering faithfulness of God. For all practical purposes Abraham’s self-will seems to be as good as dead as he raises his hand to slay his son. But the great God of mercy intervenes!
Meanwhile, Job continues to wrestle with his friend’s input – and his own struggling heart. There is nothing about his circumstances that makes any sense, and as he endures his friends’ misplaced ideas, he continues to articulate the deep questions of his heart. It is important to track process as Job’s experience unfolds. Ultimately God is bringing glory to Himself by His choice to expose, stretch, and humble Job. His friends’ stories are being woven into Job’s story, as their hearts are also exposed before the God of all living. Have you ever wondered what became of Job’s friends after the events of this book?
Deep roots are established through deep growth – and often over many days!
“And without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is and that He is a rewarder of those who seek Him.” – Hebrews 11:6
