When you turned your will toward Christ you were given a new heart. This new heart is guided by the voice of the Holy Spirit, and stands in stark contrast to your human, lost heart. This is an interesting and sweeping teaching from the God Story:
“I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit in you; I will remove from you your heart of stone and give you a heart of flesh. And I will put my Spirit in you and move you to follow my decrees and to be careful to keep my laws.” – Ezekiel 36:26-27
It is a curious mixture having an old heart and a new heart at the same time. On the one hand I am a man of flesh and bone. My natural impulses are earthly – of this world. But in my soul I have life that only Jesus can bring about. My new heart follows the impulses of the Holy Spirit – whenever I invite Him to do so!
This is such a key understanding within the nature of the faith environment into which we are birthed.
“Therefore if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creature; the old things passed away; behold, new things have come. – 2 Corinthians 5.17
