Have you ever been let down by someone you love? Passed over for promotion? Undervalued by your peers?
Have you ever experienced debilitating physical conditions that impaired or even rocked your world?
Have you lost someone or something that has torn your heart apart?
The role of suffering in this life is worth a careful look. Job gives us many keys to understanding the place of suffering, which also brings a host of questions – all eventually leading back to God’s doorstep.
We have concluded that, apart from suffering, faith cannot fully flourish. This is the answer (in part) to the huge question: “why does God allow suffering?”
“Therefore be patient, brothers, until the coming of the Lord. The farmer waits for the precious produce of the soil, being patient about it, until it gets the early and late rains. You too be patient; strengthen your hearts, for the coming of the Lord is near.
Do not complain, brothers, against one another, so that you yourselves may not be judged; behold, the Judge is standing right at the door. As an example, brothers, of suffering and patience, take the prophets who spoke in the name of the Lord.
We count those blessed who endured. You have heard of the endurance of Job and have seen the outcome of the Lord’s dealings, that the Lord is full of compassion and is merciful.“ – James 5:7-11
